How to visit Palamidi
One of the most memorable ways to visit Palamidi Fortress is on foot, climbing the famous historic staircase from Nafplio’s Old Town. The route begins near Staikopoulos Park, on the western side of the hill, and leads all the way to the fortress entrance. Although traditionally known as the “999 Steps,” the actual staircase has around 857 steps. The climb takes approximately 30–45 minutes, depending on your pace and the number of stops you make to enjoy the spectacular views over Nafplio, Bourtzi and the Argolic Gulf.
We recommend starting early in the morning or later in the afternoon, especially during the warmer months, as the staircase is exposed to the sun. Comfortable shoes, water and a little time to enjoy the views will make the experience even more enjoyable. Once you reach the top, allow some extra time to explore the impressive Venetian fortress and its historic bastions.
